Our Impact

The Impact of Our Seed of Hope Programme

Since 2004, our Seed of Hope vocational training centres have trained and supported more than 5,000 children and young people to graduate with the skills, confidence and experience they need to build secure livelihoods.

The 14-25 year olds who access our support are out of school, and impacted by Kenya’s growing poverty and inequality, and youth unemployment crisis;  driven by a lack of market-relevant skills.

The majority of Seed of Hope students are girls and young women, who are disproportionately affected, facing fewer opportunities, higher school drop out rates, lower pay, and heightened risks of exploitation, survival sex, early marriage, and early motherhood.

Seed of Hope has sustainable, scalable and evidential impact.

Seed of Hope’s high-quality teaching and holistic support delivers a 97% completion rate. Alongside acquisition of knowledge, skills and qualifications, support provided to students ensure significant uplifts in mental wellbeing; rates of possible or probable depression or anxiety among students fall from 86% at enrolment to just 5% by the end of their course (using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale).

Our most recent survey with Seed of Hope vocational course graduates, showed within 9 months of course-completion:

%

overall employment

%

running their own business (most alongside other employment)

%

earning above the international poverty line (inc. 21% above minimum wage)

%

able to save each month

%

financially independent (able to pay for their own rent, bills and food)

Every £1 invested in a young person’s training, returns a minimum of £3.50 in their initial annual income; for graduates earning above the poverty line.

“My journey has not been easy, but it has shaped the woman I am becoming. I wanted more than survival, I wanted stability, dignity, and hope. Today, I am proudly running my own business, earning an income, and providing for my child. My journey is proof that with the right support and determination, transformation is possible.”

The Multiplier Effect:

Investment in opportunities for young people generates positive impacts far beyond each individual. Within 9 months of completing their courses, 42% of graduates are financially supporting family members; siblings’ education, parents, grandparents and/or children. Many become mentors for other students and 96% regularly mentor other young people in their community. Many go on to offer internships or employment in their own enterprises, to share knowledge and create opportunities to lift up and empower other young people.

“Choosing mechanics wasn’t easy. I faced doubt, criticism, and discouragement , both from people in my community and even from within myself. Many questioned whether a young woman from a humble background could really make it in such a technical, male-dominated field… Seed of Hope didn’t just equip me with technical skills , it transformed my mindset. The institute gave me the confidence to believe in myself, and the courage to stand tall in spaces where women are often overlooked. Through mentorship, practical training, and personal development programs, I discovered that I was not limited by my background or my gender.”
