Scaling Seed of Hope

We believe the impact of the Seed of Hope model should be felt by every young person in Kenya pursuing vocational training!

Increased reach: In response to growing poverty and youth unemployment, over 5 years, we expanded our impact and reach with a 500% growth in student numbers to 1,000+ per year in 2024, by condensing courses and expanding facilities. To sustainably reach thousands more young people, our partner piloted the Seed of Hope Scaling Project, and are making strides towards the goal of influencing national policy.

Context of TVET in Kenya

Enrolment at Technical Vocational and Education Training (TVET) centres across Kenya remains low, and many experience high levels of dropout and low graduation rates. TVET graduates across the country are unable to transition to the labour market as they do not have the relevant skills or knowhow to apply their learning, and end up relying on insecure work in the informal sector, trapped in poverty.

These, we believe, are issues that need to be addressed with a holistic approach which is proven to enable young people, including more young women, to transition into secure employment. The Government has also emphasised the need for quality skills and a holistic approach in TVET training to drive industrialization of the country.

Scaling Seed of Hope Pilot Project

To enable thousands more young people to gain skills, hope and opportunities for rewarding futures, from 2024-2025, our Kenyan-NGO partner successfully piloted a Scaling Project and trained 31 educational institutions in Seed of Hope’s award-winning model and ‘Mental Health & Wellbeing and Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights Curriculum’.

Trained education partners saw rapid improvements, including lower dropout rates, reduced teenage pregnancies, and less drug use. We will use project data and evidence to advocate through the State Department of TVET for integration of the Seed of Hope model into trainer curriculum, influencing the entire TVET sector in Kenya.

“This curriculum is more than just a set of lessons; it’s a dynamic roadmap empowering our partners to deliver transformative solutions. Training others with this curriculum amplifies our impact ensuring a ripple effect of positive change across the community.”

Florence Olwenge, Programme Manager

“The training was an eye opener to me. Am able to identify youth going through difficulties and to help closed up students and youths to open up and share their situations so as to seek help.”

“After an intensive 14-day Training of Trainers on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Mental Health, the experience has been deepened my knowledge and sharpened my facilitation skills. The training also emphasized the power of inclusive, rights-based approaches and the importance of creating safe, non-judgmental spaces – especially for vulnerable groups.”
